provides the necessary technical support and analysis of the obtained data. The ATLAS buoys will be deployed in the northern central SCS between the islands of Do-Sar and Ti-Ping. The collected data will be nearly real-timed transmitted back to the land station. Around 10 miles next to each ATLAS buoy, a subsurface ADCP will be deployed to monitor the upper ocean (<250 m) current velocity. The deployment of Argos drifters will be performed two years ago in advance. Six to eight drifters will be deployed bi-seasonally. A tidal station each will be installed on Do-Sar and Ti-Ping islands. The large-scale hydrographic and marine boundary measurements will be performed seasonally from 1996 to 1999. Five and two sets of currentmeter mooring will be deployed across the Luzon and Taiwan Straits, respectively. The exact locations of moorings have not been finalized yet. Moreover, the hydrographic survey including the Sb-ADCP measurement will be performed seasonally.
The proposed time frame is set forth. The first deployment of moorings will be in April, 1997, involving one set of ATLAS and ADCP each in the northern-central basin, five sets of currentmeter mooring across the Luzon Strait, and two sets of currentmeter moorings in the Taiwan Strait. Construction on the tidal stations will begin in early spring, 1997. The Argos drifters, hydrographic survey and marine boundary layer measurement will be started in late 1996. Two additional ATLAS buoys and subsurface ADCP moorings each will be deployed in the northern-central basin in April, 1998. During the Intensive Observation Period (IOP) of SCSMEX, two research vessels will participate to do the enchanted marine boundary layer measurement. All of the moorings will possibly be kept through 1999.
Addition to the proposed fieldwork, we also plan to use altimeter data to study water transport through the Luzon and Taiwan Straits and internal waves in the interior basin. A numerical model is expected to be developed. Some of these efforts are joint projects with
